Knowability and Game Accessibility Day on "On The Media"
by Ashley Engelund - Monday, 24 May 2010, 12:21 AM

I was listening to "On The Media" this evening, a public radio show here in the states that I really like. (http://www.onthemedia.org/ ) They had some segments that really pricked up my ears: One was an interview with the women at "Knowability," (http://knowbility.org/main/), a non-profit whose mission is "to ensure barrier-free I.T. - supporting the independence of people with disabilities by promoting the use and improving the availability of accessible information technology." It wasn't a long piece, but I was glad to hear that they talked about IT access in a broad way - barriers that cover many modalities.
Another piece they did this eve was about "Game Accessibility Day." http://www.gameaccessibilityday.org/ I've learned about this only recently because of the some of the folks here at GimpGirl. That was a really good piece, I thought. They talked about the many different types of disabilities that are being addressed in gaming.
All folks interviewed made the point that the number of disabled is increasing. People are hungry to have access to the net and all other technology; it's a growing market sector and cannot be ignored.
You can go to the On The Media site and listen to the interviews; transcripts for the interviews should be available Monday, May 24.
(I'm a bit tired, so hope this wasn't too rambling.)

I am under a lot of stress right now because a lot of things related to this trip are not going as planned, and I'm moving across the country after the conference. I did not read, and thought this was the staff forum. I am so so sorry.

Short version: I'm presenting on behalf of GimpGirl at Gaming Accessibility Day. Details to follow when I'm not posting from my phone.
